Job Description

Position: Part time (20 hours/week)

Schedule: Flexible, requires Sunday mornings every weekend one afternoon/evening a month

Office Location: In Person. Must live locally

Reports to: Epworth Leadership Council

Salary: $20/hour

Background

Epworth United Methodist Church (UMC) is a reconciling church located in southeast Portland. Founded in 1893 by Japanese immigrants, Epworth today welcomes and celebrates seekers from all walks of life: all races, all ethnicities, all sexual orientations, all gender identities or expressions, all ages, all income levels, and all abilities, exceptionalities, or intersections that make you uniquely you.

Position Summary

The Youth and Family Outreach Coordinator is responsible for designing, organizing, and implementing the new Inside/Outside youth and family program at Epworth. The Inside/Outside program has two key functions:

1) Outreach: engage youth and families in the Portland area who have a history of a faith connection or interest in service, but are not currently looking to attend a traditional church setting through monthly events; and

2) Education: serve youth and families who already attend Epworth by encouraging their growth in faith through weekly Sunday school activities.

In consultation with the Epworth Leadership Council and working closely with Rev. Melissa Harkness and the Inside/Outside Steering committee, the Outreach Coordinator will develop both branches of the Inside/Outside program.

This is currently a one-year position, with the possibility for extension based on funding.

Responsibilities

The Outreach Coordinator’s core responsibilities include:

Outreach (75%)

· Planning and running monthly outreach activities that speak to Epworth’s mission of service and community engagement

· Liaising with local communities and organizations to build partnerships and positive relationships

· Advertising the Inside/Outside program to the wider Portland community, including use of email and social media

Education (20%)

· Designing weekly Sunday school curriculum in consultation with Rev. Harkness

· Leading weekly age-appropriate Sunday school activities for Epworth youth

· Coordinating congregational participation in both Sunday school and monthly outreach activities

Program Administration (5%):

· Collecting and maintaining contact information of program attendees

· Reporting on program activities to Rev. Melissa Harkness and the Epworth Leadership Council

· Adhering to all safe conduct policies established by the congregation’s leadership

Qualifications

Required:

· Experience in project management, volunteer coordination, or event planning

· Experience working with youth and families

· Excellent interpersonal skills

· Strong organizational and communication skills

· Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion

· Must be available for Sunday mornings, and one afternoon/evening per month

· Must be 21 years and older to meet Safe Sanctuary policies

Preferred:

· A background in education or youth work

· Understanding of the basic Bible stories

· Confidence using email and social media’s marketing and communication tools

· Knowledge of Microsoft Office suite and Google Drive applications
